Have you ever get lost in the mountains? Truthfully, I never had the experience, because Latvia doesn’t even have them. However, I found myself there. Let me explain.

In December 2022, I, a young software engineering student from Latvia, found myself at a crossroads. While preparing for exams at the academy, I received an unexpected message from Svetlana Semenyaka. Me and her have a long history of working together, she is my first theatre director and a teacher. Thanks to her I was a part of many projects. And this message was a new opportunity at hand. Claudio Caponigro, the head of Controluce SAS, was in search of a volunteer for his project in Campagna. Previously I have been in this town back in 2017 during a theatre festival, so I eagerly accepted the chance to work there. A week after my graduation from university on 30th of June 2023, I boarded a plane to Italy.

I was greeted with as much love and friendliness as southern Italians can give. On the very first week I’ve met my closest friends. I was introduced to my new home and work that I will have to do. The beautiful view from my bedroom on the green mountains and vines of pink wildflowers on the balcony inspired me to give to this project the best I can.

Controluce SAS, a company specializing in lighting and sound services for various events, became my window into the world of business management. Engaging in activities ranging from sound setups for theatrical performances to assisting with the assembly and disassembly of lighting equipment, I found myself deeply immersed in the company’s operations. Antonio and Claudio Caponigro organized meetings to discuss projects and plans, providing me with insights into business strategies.

I have also delved into digital transformation. I collaborated on the online promotion of SeleTeatroFest and contributed to web development projects. Guided by Claudio and Antonio, I learned not only the intricacies of event management but also the art of leading a team in the fast-paced world of business.

This project really became a transformative chapter for me. As I previously have worked on the stage, now I ventured to the backstage, and I have gained new technical skills and insights into organizational management. The exposure to the nuances of Italy’s working environment, its strengths and challenges, enriched my understanding of international business dynamics. I have also started to learn Italian to broaden my communication skills.

Because of this project, I discovered my niche in web design and development. Additionally, my contributions as a photographer and web developer were highly valued by Controluce SAS.

I have created a great bond with all the colleagues from Controluce SAS and actors from Teatro dei Dioscuri. I’m planning to revisit Campagna in the upcoming year. Reflecting on my transformative experience, I can wholeheartedly recommend such program, especially for recent graduates. The six months of entrepreneurial immersion allowed me to redefine my goals, understand my strengths and weaknesses. I trully had a personal and professional growth and I finally found my purpose. I am very grateful.
